Probiotics

Probiotics are ESSENTIAL to human nutrition.

What are Probiotics? They are live microorganisms that are also known as “good bacteria” which are similar to the good microorganisms already present in the gut. Probiotics do wonders for the immune system by lessening the growth of harmful bacteria that can make us sick. Surprisingly enough, most illnesses that we wouldn’t normally think could be caused by problems in the “gut”-usually are.
Does everyone need them? Very few people can say they consume a perfect diet and maintain the perfect lifestyle. Unless you are one of the few- you probably should consider adding this supplement to your diet. The digestive system becomes imbalanced by:

  • Over usage of antibiotics
  • Consuming processed/unhealthy foods
  • Excess stress and anxiety
  • Excess alcohol intake
  • Infections of the gastrointestinal tract
  • Exposure to toxic and unnatural substances

Probiotics where can I find them? Probiotics can be found in foods like yogurts, some cheeses, and smoothies to name a few- however the most beneficial way to consume probiotics is from taking the supplement. Be careful however to read all labels before purchasing any product claiming to contain probiotics. Somewhere on the label it should read “contains live and active cultures”. That’s the only way the product can truly provide the necessary health benefits.

Probiotics are used for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome, vaginal and skin infections, and tooth decay/gum disease just to name a few.

When you come into our office, we can better recommend the type of probiotic that is best for you. Be sure to speak to Dr. Danubio prior to consuming any supplements. Each patient is evaluated on a case by case basis and every patient has different and unique needs that are treated individually.

Fish Oil

Fish Oil (Omega-3 fatty acid) is one of the few vital supplements that can drastically improve overall health. This supplement can be found in both capsule and liquid form, as well as several foods. Fish oil is mostly known for its brain and heart benefits, but you may not have known that it can help maintain a healthy, high-functioning nervous system. Other than being a rock star for the brain, some more benefits include:

  • Decreased inflammation
  • Improved immune system
  • Increased antioxidants
  • Lowered blood pressure
  • Improved circulation
  • Keeps hair, nails, and skin healthy
  • Improves memory and concentration
  • Improves vision quality (used to treat glaucoma)

Because the body is unable to produce omega-3 naturally, it is essential to consume regularly. Other than fish oil supplements, foods containing omega-3 include:

  • Pasture-raised meats
  • Dairy from grass-fed animals
  • Eggs
  • Edamame
  • Walnuts
  • Flax seed
  • Wild, organic fish (especially salmon and tuna)

Because fish oil is strongly linked to heart health, it is often recommended for patients who are at risk for heart attacks and strokes.

Be sure to speak to Dr. Danubio prior to consuming any supplements. Each patient is evaluated on a case-by-case basis and every patient has different and unique needs that are treated individually. Better brain food with increased omega-3 will lead to a happy, healthy, and abundant life!

Vitamin D

It is estimated that ONE BILLION people worldwide are Vitamin D deficient! In some cases, it’s due to lack of adequate sun exposure (long New England winters!). In other cases, it can be due to poor diet. Believe it or not, lack of this vitamin increases your susceptibility to autoimmune diseases and conditions such as cancer, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, and much more.

Did you know that Vitamin D deficiency can also cause mood swings and depression? Balanced levels of Vitamin D in the bloodstream stimulates the area of the brain that is responsible for controlling mood function. This vitamin plays a key role in helping the brain maintain cognitive functions later in life.

Some benefits that come from regular Vitamin D intake include:

  • Reduces the severity of asthma.
  • Lowers the risk of cancer.
  • Fights the common cold and flu by strengthening the immune system.

What is the best way to get Vitamin D?

Sunlight is the most natural way to give your body what it truly needs. If you decide the supplement form is a better choice, the recommended dosage is 5,000 (IU) per day. Foods that contain Vitamin D are:

  • Cod Fish Oil
  • Tuna
  • Wild Salmon
  • Egg Yolk
  • Milk
  • Yogurt
  • Orange Juice

Be sure to speak to Dr. Danubio prior to consuming any supplements. Each patient is evaluated on a case-by-case basis and every patient has unique needs that must treated individually.
